Syracuse Dental Practice

James Street Dental Arts, PC may be a new name, but it has been deeply rooted in Eastwood for 60 years. Dr. Edward Rapson and Dr. Richard Gladziszewski built the present building in 1955 when they decided to join together in a group family dental practice. Dr. Rapson had a thriving practice on Grace Street, in his mother’s house. Dr. Gladziszewski practiced above the Palace Theater in Eastwood until a fire destroyed much of his office. They built their new office at the present site of 3309 James Street. Betty McLaughlin was hired as office manager and remained there until her retirement in the fall of 1992.

History of Syracuse dental practice.Drs. Rapson and Gladziszewski practiced alone until the late 1970’s when Dr. Richard Giarrusso joined them. After a short time, Dr. Giarrusso decided he wanted to practice dentistry on his own so he moved on. In 1977, Dr. Timothy O’Brien and Dr. Donald (Tom) Sheridan were exiting the Navy and joined Drs. Rapson and Gladziszewski. The building was enlarged when they came in. The four dentists each had two operatories and there were five rooms for dental hygienists.

Dr. Gladziszewski retired in 1986. That is when Dr. Paul Edwards joined the partnership. Dr. Gregory French joined a few months later. At that time, Dr. Rapson worked part time until the end of 1992. Dr. O’Brien retired in 2001. When he retired, Dr. Lawrence Corso was recruited as a partner.

For many years, the practiced consisted of Drs.Sheridan, Edwards French and Corso. Dr. Sheridan decided to retire in the summer of 2015. As he retired, Dr. Yvonne Tsay joined the practice. She is a graduate of UB and had been practicing in California prior to relocating in New York. The newest dentist in the practice, Dr. Stephen Streiff, joined the practice after completing his residency at Upstate. The staff has grown to include 5 dentists, 7 dental hygienists, 5 dental assistants, 4 front desk personnel and the office manager.

In 2005, the office underwent a major remodeling. On the exterior, after 50 years, a trussed roof replaced the old flat roof and gained curb appeal. Changes to the interior included a reconfiguration of the waiting room and reception area. This allowed a better patient flow for checking patients in and out. New higher efficiency lighting was installed throughout the office, new suspended ceilings and flooring was installed. The operatories sport prefinished wood floors and the halls are carpeted. New windows that open were installed on the north side of the building. There now is a consultation room with a large screen TV to display treatment plans too.

Equipment updates have been ongoing. Three years ago we acquired our iTero digital impression unit. It is a high tech method of impression-taking that allows us to email the impression to the labs. It is less burdensome on the patients too. All operatories are equipped with computers and we have updated to digital x-rays. By using digital sensors, the small amount of radiation exposure used previously was cut to about 75% of the previous exposure. The panorex unit allows us to take whole-mouth x-rays needed by oral surgeons, orthodontists and other specialists. It saves the patient time when referred out. Digital x-rays can even be sent directly to the specialists by email.

As part of the updated technology, implants and Invisalign clear braces are now offered in the office. These are part of the expanded duties the doctors provide for the benefit of the patients.

Many of the present patients are either original patients of Drs. Rapson and Gladziszewski or the 2nd or 3rd generation of them. The practice prides themselves in being family oriented. They try to treat each patient as an individual and not a number. Most of the employees have been there over 20 years. In this day and age, it is comforting to know that you will see a familiar face when you walk through the door.

Recently, Dr Edwards retired after 32 years of providing care to our patients. We wish him happy retirement.
